Printers have been around for a very long time. From the oldhand cranked block printing machines, to the most advancedcolor laser printers on the market, they have made tediouswriting by hand outdated. Now you simply have to type upwhat you want to say on your computer, put paper into sheetfeeder, and push print. Like magic out comes your documentmaking it easy to print a book, send out some flyers foryour church bake sale, or whatever your printing needs are.Before the advent of computer printers for home use, to getthese types of documents one would have to go and pay aprinting business to make them for you, or make one by handand photocopy it. Either way could be quite costly if youwanted to make lots of copies.Printers come in a wide variety; there is dot matrix,ink-jet, bubble-jet, and laser printers to name a few.

Dotmatrix printers are sort of antiques now but they used aseries of pins to make the lettering. If you look closely ata document or photo printed on one of these you can make outthe dot patterns. Ink and bubble-jet printers work bysquirting heated ink through a matrix of holes to formimages or characters.Laser printers form the characters or image on aspecial-coated drum with a laser light, which is turned offand on as dictated by the computer, then transfers theoutput from the drum to the paper, using photocopyingtechniques. Less commonly used printers for home use areThermal-wax-transfer printers and dye-sublimation printersthat use heat to transfer color pigment from a ribbon to aspecial paper to produce photographic-quality color images.To further differentiate the various printers, you can breakthem down to impact and non-impact. One other example is theformed character printer.

The way that these work is byforcing a metal or plastic character against an inked ribbonto produce a sharp image on paper. These characters may beon a moving bar, a rotating ball, a rapidly rotating chain,or wheel spokes. Although noisy, impact printers can producemultiple copies of business forms simultaneously usingcarbon or carbonless techniques.Non-impact printers use thermal and electrostatic, ratherthan mechanical, techniques, such as ink-jet, laser,bubble-jet, and the others mentioned above. Non-impactprinters are quieter than impact printers and produce higherquality output, especially of graphics, but at a greatercost per page of course. Many years ago when I was a copier technician my boss would always tell us to push our companies supplies, paper, toner etc.. Of course they wanted to sell more supplies and make more money but their techniques were very questionable. Just like printers you could go out and purchase generic supplies and some worked better than others naturally. Well the supplies that we sold were also mostly generic, however, they were branded with our companies name and logos. Here's where the sneakiness comes in.

When a customer complained about a repair cost estimate we were told to blame it on their inferior generic supplies and to further that the repair would have been much cheaper if they were using our over-priced supplies. I explained this to many customers on many occasions while desperately trying to suppress my rage at being forced to hand this BS to unknowing customers while I knew full well that what I was telling them was absolutely untrue.
